New HDR photos

From Ondra Čermák, On Oct.13, 2011, category Photography

Lately I neglect my web a little bit and I add photos only to my Google+ profile. If you want to see newest photos, add me there :-) . I’ve decided that I’ll add the photos here too and do a little experiment with linking them to Picasa, so I don’t have to upload them twice. Picasa is connected to Google+ and whatever I add there, it’s added to Picasa and the other way round, ingenious.

Hello from Munich

From Ondra Čermák, On Jul.24, 2011, category Boring notes, Photography

I’ve decided that I will bite the bullet and actually write something after a long time. As you’ve probably noticed, there isn’t anything new lately. It is because I am in Munich for whole summer, where I work as an Software Engineering Intern in Google (you maybe know that company :-) ). I won’t try to describe what a wonderful experience this is, I will reserve another post for that. Unfortunatelly I don’t know when this post will be come up, because I working late over the week and on weekend I often travel somewhere.

Huge advantage of Munich is, that it is about 50km from the Alps, so you can jump in a car and you are in beautiful nature in a while. But the weather is against it – most of the time it rains or there are at least grey clouds, which make ugly photos… But so far we were lucky and when we were going somewhere, the weather was quite nice.

I’d like to add some photos, but as I’ve written before, I don’t have much time. To be clear, I have some to make photos, but I don’t have time to process them. Also I am lacking proper computer. My old laptop takes quite a long time to do anything. Because I shoot everything to RAW and I like to play a bit with nice photos, there won’t be many updates as long as I am here. I put not processed photos to Picasa regularly, so you can see them there. They are also visible on my Google+ profile.

I add some photo in the end, without it the post wouldn’t be complete :) It is my historically first attempt to create HDR photography. It is created from one RAW, which was then processed 5 times with one-EV stops. I’ve used Luminance HDR (former qtfpsgui). I think the result is not that bad, see it for yourself.

I watch HDR photography for some time, but until I haven’t tried it. Approximately two day before I’ve ran into a known HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff‘s profile on Google+, who’s photos inspired me to actually try it too. You should definetely see his blog StuckInCustoms.com, where is a new photo from his travels every day. And he travels a lot.

If you have any questions about Munich, Google, internship, HDR, leave me a comment. PS: Sorry for the messy structure of this post….:)

Canon Zoom Day 2011

From Ondra Čermák, On Jun.02, 2011, category Photography

We haven’t overslept this year and we went to  Canon Zoom Day in Prague Zoo in Troja. There was a few Canon stands with photo equipment to try – various combinations of bodies and lenses and visitor could also try lens on his own body.

Photos were taken on own SD card and in the end of the day it was possible to sign up one photo to the competition. I haven’t won anything of course, the competition was big :-) . One don’t see this kind of concentration of photographers in one place.

I don’t have anything more to write about this event… Maybe just that people from Canon were successful with their intentions – since then I am still looking on the internet for something to buy :-) .

Here are some photos with descriptions of the cameras that they was taken with. As they are just “test” photos, there is only Picasa album.

Pencil export template for Android UI prototyping

From Ondra Čermák, On Mar.14, 2011, category Programming

As I am just working on low fidelity prototype of CTU Navigator (my diploma thesis), I need suitable tool for it’s creation and following testing. I found the tool in Pencil application, for which Roman Nurikhas created stencilů collection with android UI components. Prototype creation is a joy then.

Of course there was this problem with exporting it, becouse I haven’t found any export template that was suitable for testing. In the end I modified  one of the templates available at the project site to fit my needs. The result looks like this:

And here is the template for download. I hope I am not violating any license…if so, let me know in the comments.

Custom tabs in Android tutorial

From Ondra Čermák, On Nov.26, 2010, category Programming

android logoRecently I had to customize tabs in one Android application. It wasn’t anything nice. There is no easy way to do it – one would expect some kind of property which sets a background of the tab etc. Funny thing is, that last week on Google Developer Day in Prague someone (Reto Meier or Roman Nurik or maybe someone else :-D ) have said to us:  ”Don’t use undocumented APIs”. I believe this is not “API”, rather it is playing with UI layouts – so we should be cool about that :-)

Basically there are two ways to customize tabs in Android. One is easier, but rather dirty than clean. I will try to describe both of them and point out some advantages and disadvantages.
